Being Metis is an identity predominantly in Canada, but also in the Northern parts of the U.S. First, perhaps you can define that for people, and then speak a bit about that moment reading Erdrich, and what happens when you finally see yourself on the page? But, you tell the story of reading Louise Erdrich, and that in her stories was the first reference you ever read to being Metis. I’m middle-class, white, grew up in suburban America, and so I never had to go looking for myself.
